Virtual Background

Creating a Virtual Background

The space that we occupy on campus is branded. We walk by University of Alberta signage as we go to and from classes. Buildings and internal space have banners, placards, and other ways in which it says "you are in the University of Alberta".

As we work from our personal spaces for a while, we can brand our digital space to remind us that we are still at the University of Alberta. If you are able to, we invite you to set up a virtual background for CMPUT 415. First, create an image with the course banner at the top. Use images that reflect you or the place where you are attending from at the bottom part of the image --- do not use any image that you would not have in a t-shirt that you would be wearing to class.

One way to create such a background is to create a single slide in powerpoint and export the slide as a jpeg file as shown in examples here:

To activate a virtual background in Zoom, use the Zoom app instead of the web-based connection. At the bottom left Click on the Up arrow to the right of the “Stop Video” icon and the option to use a virtual background will appear. Virtual backgrounds without using a physical green screen behind you will only work in computers with relatively new processors.
